One of the great inventions of the 20th Century, the classic pique polo was essentially developed by the French Tennis Champion Rene Lacoste, which he made famous with his signature “alligator” logo emblazoned on the left chest. Lacoste, in addition to being a world champion Tennis player, was an accomplished inventor, painter and overall Renaissance man.

Over the years, the basic fit of the tshirt has become much looser and fuller, and more oriented to golf than tennis, but the basics, the rib knit collar and cuff, two button placket, and the long tuck in tail, have remained. When a Queensboro Shirt is made, while others use only a regular single-ply yarn, we use only twisted two-ply, domestically grown and spun, 100% ring spun combed cotton yarn. Each shirt is then custom embroidered with your logo from designs created from your artwork.

Embroidery, selecting your colors and own design.

In the above example, the same logo appears on two different fabric colors. The logo on the left, has gold thread for the text and the logo on the right has black thread for the text. In your order, all navy bodied shirts would have the same colors as the logo on the left. Similarly, all white bodied shirts would have the colors as the logo on the right.

Once your design has been digitized and approved, and your shirts have been selected, the next step to select which thread colors you want on the different color shirts you have ordered. Within an individual order, different shirt colors can have different logo colors, but all shirts of the same color, must have the same color logos. For example, if your order has red, white and blue shirts, the red shirts must all have the same color embroidery, the white shirts must all have the same color embroidery, and the blue shirts must all have the same color embroidery. All the red shirts could have white embroidery, all the white shirts could have blue embroidery, and all the blue shirts could have white embroidery, but you could not have some of your red shirts with white embroidery, some with blue embroidery, and some with red embroidery.

And while it is impossible to have good embroidery results without top quality digitizing, there are many factors in how an embroidery machine is operated and maintained that determine the ultimate quality of the embroidery. Though much of the process as been automated over the years, as it has been for centuries, embroidery is an art, not a science and the best practicioners are highly sensitive to the history and nuances of the craft, and are passionate and take great pride in their work.
