Economists agree that the EU has effectively increased the standard of living of its residents. Another benefit of the merger is the freedom to work and travel within the member countries.

The EU currently includes 15 member states: Ireland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Greece. Applications from the following countries are currently being reviewed: Estonia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Cyprus.

If you have an EC (European Community) passport or if your parents came from an EC country you can work freely in the EC. Outside the EC, but within Europe different rules apply. If you are non European, different rules apply in each country to determine your eligibility. Generally, job seekers from Canada, Australia, and the United States are allowed to work and travel in Europe up to three months without a permit. During that time, you may find an employer willing to sponsor your work permit, particularly if you have special skills.
