Getting Started
With Online Job Searching

Looking for a job is work - it takes time, energy and effort... and you should plan on your job search being a full-time job.  The most important factors contributing to the success of your search for employment are knowing your skills and your goals, having an understanding of the job market, and carefully planning a campaign that includes traditional and online job searching.

Start by analyzing your skills, interests and values:

Get some ideas about what you want to do ( a few references are linked ):

Research the areas you are interested in

Try networking, it really does work.   Develop contacts - friends, family, college alumni, people in associations - anyone who might  help generate information and job leads.  You can take a direct approach and ask for job leads or try a less formal approach and ask for information and advice.  Contact everyone you know. You may be surprised by the people they know.

Some tips to remember while networking ~

  • Conduct informational interviews with your contacts and ask for referrals for additional meetings

  • Follow through with referrals, and always thank contacts in writing

  • Create an inventory of your accomplishments, including your educational background and work history,  to keep at hand should a chance encounter become a contact

  • Make a list of the assets you will bring as a prospective employee

If you haven't memorized all your strengths and and strong points write them down - you'll need to articulate these in your resumes and cover letters well as emphasize them during interviews.

Need help with your resume? Take a look at advice for creating a traditional resume or one to use online.  Prepare a simple version that is easily transferable to a variety of formats.   There are several methods of posting resumes online you will need to become familiar with; these include cutting and pasting into a form, uploading from a word processing file or sending via email.

Job searching online makes it easier to conduct remote job searches by accessing resources like lists of companies, online classifieds, and regional online job banks that relate to a particular location or career field.   In the past you had to go to the library to research, now you can use the internet to:

Conduct employer researchand visit company web sites to research the organization, browse job listings and maybe even apply online

Use resume posting sites and jobs databases

Receive job listings by email

Attend virtual and live events ( a few references are linked ) :

Next, get in touch with companies you're interested in. Send or email your resume and cover letter or apply online, then follow up with a phone call or an email message. Try to set up interviews with managers and supervisors in departments of interest, if possible. In many cases this strategy may be more effective than going directly through Human Resources.

According to the Harvard Business Review almost 80% of jobs are not advertised in the classifieds so job seekers need to use multiple strategies including:

Joining professional association in your field

Joining electronic discussion groups relevant to the field your interested in

When the interviews start rolling in, make sure you're thoroughly prepared with information on your skills and background and your prospective employer.  This will help make you the successful candidate and not just another applicant. Finally, finding the right job isn't always fast and easy. Try not to get discouraged - your efforts will succeed!
