INTERVIEW WITH 3-DNET®
Listen to sample sound "bites" from the interview:
Question 1 : Tell me about yourself
I was born and raised in a suburb of Chicago, IL, the youngest of three girls. After I graduated from high school I decided to serve in the Navy to earn money for college and to gain new experiences. Upon completion of the Navy I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems, and then moved to Tucson, AZ. In Arizona I work at the Health Science Library while completing my MBA, which I will finish in August.
Question 2 : What can you offer to your next employer ?
With my background in Computer’s and Business I can offer my next employer a person with the ability to solve complex and diverse business and technology challenges with unique solutions.
Question 3 : What are your strengths ?
My strengths are those associated with strong leadership and the ability to create a productive work environment. I’ve learned that there is uniqueness to most challenges and listening to others opinion is important to making decisions. To this end, I listen to managers, peers and subordinates in order to reach the best solution to problems, then l pull the team together to complete the project.
Question 4 : What are your accomplishments ?
My MBA, this degree is something I have wanted for a long time. Everything I did in the past was with the goal of working toward the MBA from serving in the Navy to receiving my bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems.
I moved to Arizona to pursue my MBA, the completion of my MBA is my greatest accomplishment to date, because the degree did not come easy I had to stay focused on the goal for many years and through road blocks..
Question 5 : What are your limitations ?
I have no limitations. Putting limitations on yourself is counterproductive and does not allow you to see what is possible. I am not say I do not have any weakness, but the way I was raised was that if there was a job to be done, it was counterproductive to say you could not do what need to be done it did not change the situation. On a ship in the Navy you could not say I can’t do that and hope someone else would do the job. You did the job.
Question 6 : How much are you worth ?
I am worth as much as, if not more than anyone with similar qualifications. Having shown determination and dedication, as well as, technical ability, which will make me a valuable asset to any company.
Question 7 : What are your ambitions for the future ?
My ambitions are rather simple to continue to improve myself in all aspects of my life. I believe you can always learn and improve on everything you do. That good does not come from the ends, but from the journey.
Question 8 : How long would it take you start contributing to the firm?
Depending on the business itself, I would say 2 to 3 months is normal. However anytime you join a new organization, you can see things in a different light coming from the outside. While learning the company’s business, you can have an immediate effect on the organization and its bottom line.
Question 9: What is your management style?
My management style is clear and concise, allowing everyone to understand what I need from them; thereby reducing the uncomfortable guessing game many managers place on their team members.
Question 10: Why do you think you have a good potential to be a manager?
I have experiences behind me that help me to be intuitive and know the direction to go. I am constantly improving my skills through seminars, college course work as well as other journals, so I’m ready for change as needed.
Question 11: What would you look for in hiring people?
Do they have the years of experience in the skills set required? Will they work well with the rest of the team? Can they be integrating into the corporate culture? It’s also important to have an individual who can communicate articulately.
Question 12: As a manager, have you ever had to fire someone?
No, I have never been required to fire someone I managed.
Question 13: What do you see as the most difficult task of being a manager?
I think the most difficult task for any manager is being able to listen to and respect each member of the team regardless of personalities.
Question 14: Describe what you feel is the best work environment?
I feel the best work environment is one that is open to free expression of ideas and in which mutual respect is abundant. Where management gives enough direction to make the task clear, but not so much that it inhibits the work getting done. There is a fine line between making sure the task is getting done and slowing its progress.
Question 15: Looking back how do you describe your past employer?
Generally it was a very good work environment. Everyone got along well and the managers weren’t a distraction to the work. It’s a good company, but I am not able to do what I would like to do right now.
Question 16: What have you done to increase productivity, performance, efficiency, etc..?
The one thing I’ve done to increase productivity and performance is to deployment new technologies and equipment. This new equipment was switches and hubs I have installed on the network to increase connection speed from 10 Mbs to 1 Gig connection. The increase connection speed allows for better connection to the network and the Internet allowing for future growth.
Question 17: Whether you are a "computer wizard", how do you respond to the financial side of your responsibilities?
In today’s financial climate I respond very seriously to the financial sides of my work. Regardless if I am running one or several projects, each with their own budgets, it is those figures that I take responsibility for, to deliver in the agreed to budgets. In the event previously identified risks are not overcome I will re-examine the financial impact.
Question 18: How many people have you supervised in your recent job?
Presently I have managed two, one student and one staff member. In the past I have managed up to 8 people at one time mainly in the Navy.
Question 19: What do you like more, working with figures or words?
I enjoy working with both I think you have to have the figures to make your words have mean, and enable easier understanding of the situation.
Question 20: How do you think that your subordinates receive you?
In the past I think they you have said I was fair, honest and direct with what I wanted from them.
Question 21: What do you think of your previous boss?
The last boss I had was professional in working with the rest of the systems department to meet the obligation place upon us by other departments. My last boss also taught me the importance of having department off time such as lunch out. These lunches out allowed the department to communication with each other in a non-business atmosphere, this made it easier to ask for help from other team member when the situation called for it.
Question 22: Describe a situation in which your work was criticized?
There is no situation that I can think of were my work was criticized. Working in the computer field my assignments are well defined and reviewed allowing me to complete the tasks required. Most department and personnel are happy to see me for it means that computer problems will be fixed or new computer equipment has arrived.
Question 23: If I spoke with your boss what he would say about your greatest strength and weaknesses?
My boss would say my greatest strength is that I work until the job is done and my greatest weakness is that I do not always let others know when I am finished with a job. This is something I have been working over the past year. I am now receiving complements for my responsiveness to a problem as well as my communication when the problem is resolved.
"If I spoke with your boss.... ?"
Question 24: How can you handle life under pressure and with tough deadlines?
Deadlines are good, even tough deadlines are fine as long as they are realistic. I generally place some sort of time line on my work anyway, so having someone else place a deadline on me does not bother me. If for some reason I cannot make the deadline I inform the parties, and explain why and when I can get the project done. Being realistic and honest makes any deadline easy to handle.
Question 25: What do you think you do better: staff work or line work?
I do both equally well since both staff work and line work go hand-in-hand with technology.
Question 26: In your current position, what problem have you identified that was previously overlooked?
The nature of the work I do there are always problems that arise, that I need to identify. The biggest problem that my work had that was over looked was the server backup schema. The past schema only allowed one days worth of backup data, the backup tapes were automatically over written the next night. This over writing made it impossible to retrieve data more then one day old. I change the schema to daily backups that were over written then next week and Friday backups that were saved for a month, that allows for better disaster recovery if the worst happen.
Question 27: If you had a choice of job and a company what would you choose?
Of course would want a company that is ethical and a job where I could use my talents. I think the best job for me would be a liaison between management and computer personal explaining what management needs and what is possible with computers.
Question 28:Do you have any objection to take a psychological test?
No objection at all.
Question 29: Do you consider yourself as a creative person?
Yes I do. The nature of technology produces many creative approaches to solve issues that arise.

Outgoing, friendly and energetic. As a manager, I’m clear, decisive and consistent, which I believe will help me to be a good manager.
