INTERVIEW WITH 3-DNET®

Interview in Italian

Listen to sample sound "bites" from the interview:

Question 1 : Tell me about yourself

I was raised in a close family where my Father was developing his own business. I often assisted in the administration of it and made sales calls with him. There I developed qualities of fiscal responsibility, entrepreneurship, dependability, decisiveness, and general operational awareness.

Later I was offered an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy where I learned leadership, chain of command, authority, and responsibility. My successes earned for me a Battalion Commander position my senior year. Academically I achieved my Bachelors Degree graduating with honors with a double major in Management and in Economics. To further my education I attained a Masters Degree in Business from Webster University.

My achievements moved me to management or executive positions throughout my business career. I have opened a new company sales office and started a new company. I also spent a number of years in aviation, where I became an airline pilot. These experiences have made me a flexible person. Also, while I lived abroad I became well traveled and knowledgeable of many cultures and governments.

On a personal level I am married to a lovely woman and have raised five children. Only the youngest is still at home. We are a happy family.

Question:  "Tell me about yourself....?"

Question 2 : What can you offer to your next employer ?

I can offer solid executive and management experience. A team player with strong leadership, decision making, interpersonal, communication, and problem solving abilities driven to solve problems and improve operations. I am a flexible and internationally traveled ‘go to’ guy with company building experience; a mobile person with all the aviation licenses.

Question:  "What can you offer....?"

Question 3 : What are your strengths ?

I am confident of my abilities as a born diplomat building win-win situations. I have proposed business plans to the vice ambassador of a country that lead to high level business appointments. As a fast paced task oriented person with strong leadership skills, I develop positive working relationships with those whom I manage. Additionally, I have the ability to improve upon the status quo or current level of accomplishment, especially in a fiscal sense.

Question:  "What are your strengths?"

Question 4 : What are your accomplishments ?

My major accomplishments are as follows:

1. I successfully opened branch sales office for Padre Tubular, Inc. In a highly competitive environment I took advantage of the opportunities and helped turned this new office profitable in the second month.

2. Analyzed and submitted improved schedule for FedEx regional shuttle service in the Philippines. This saved time and resources in this area.

3. Co-founder of US Road Guard, Inc. where I developed a sales presentation that increased sales 90%.

4. FedEx Humanitarian Award Winner 1998 for saving a man being assaulted by a knife attacker.

Question:  "What are your accomplishments?"

Question 5 : What are your limitations ?

I believe it is unfruitful to limit yourself. If you approach an issue professionally and back yourself up with capable workers then the only limitations are time and energy.

Question:  "What are your limitations ?"

Question 6 : How much are you worth ?

Companies often use past experience to value one’s present “worth”. I will let my record of leadership and accomplishments direct your decision process. I trust you would offer me a suitable compensation package that that would allow me to focus fully on the goals that need to be accomplished.

Question:  "How much are you worth ?"

Question 7 : What are your ambitions for the future ?

I’m seeking a challenging position in leadership and corporate management. I want to be an integral part of a company’s growth for the rest of my career.

Question:  "What are your ambitions for the future ?"

Question 8 : How long would it take you start contributing to the firm?

The successful opening of a new company office and starting a new company demonstrate that I am a quick learner. Once I learn the scope of my role in your company’s growth I should begin contributing immediately.

Question:  "How long would it take ... ?"

Question 9: What is your management style?

I am a fast-pace task oriented person that rallies employees to increase teamwork and cooperation in accomplishing each step of the project. I believe that an understanding of the big picture from all points of view allows one to make the best decisions and to channel, not micro-manage my employee’s efforts.

Question:  "What is your management style .... ?"

Question 10: Why do you think you have a good potential to be a manager?

I am confident of my leadership abilities which began in my youth, were further developed in the military, and were fine tuned during my Sales Manager and Vice President positions. Experience has shown that people willingly follow my management style.

Question:  "Why do you think you..... ?"

Question 11: What would you look for in hiring people?

Talent and experience are important in any business. However, I feel that attitude is the most important asset a person can bring to the company. The most significant part of one’s attitude is the manner in which a person acts when situations are going against them. Those who stay the course and move to improve themselves in light of adversity will eventually prevail.

Question:  "What would you look for hiring .... ?"

Question 12: As a manager, have you ever had to fire someone?

Yes. As sales manager I had occasional nonproductive employees. I would work with them for a given period of time, keeping records of the process. If the employee’s attitude and sales did not improve I would be forced to fire the individual..

Question:  "As a manager, have you ever..... ?"

Question 13: What do you see as the most difficult task of being a manager?

The most difficult task of being a manager is to not micromanage, but to accumulate a team of employees whose sum of the total work is greater than the sum of their parts. My experience shows that by providing my team the latitude to perform to the best of their ability without fear of reprisal good men achieve more than if micromanaged.

Question:  "What do you see as...... ?"

Question 14: Describe what you feel is the best work environment?

A company that breeds open communication, creativity, and cooperation has worked well in the fields in which I have had positions of authority. In an environment such as this an employee can take pride in his work and build loyalty to his company. In these situations the sum of the total work is greater than the sum of the parts.

Question:  "Describe what you feel..... ?"

Question 15: Looking back how do you describe your past employer?

My last employer was FedEx. Fred Smith is one of the wisest businessmen I know. He took a company from an idea (expedited freight) to a byword (FedEx it) in minimal time and with few mistakes. Working for Fred Smith has taught me the importance of holding the bottom line, responding quickly to changes in the business environment, and developing political connections. It has been a great education in how to grow a company.

Question:  "Looking back how do you ..... ?"

Question 16: What have you done to increase productivity, performance, efficiency, etc..?

Years ago I was involved in the start-up company. Our sales presentation at first had little success in attaining business customers. After analyzing the presentation I was involved in a redesign of our sales presentation. It was successful in that it increased sales 90% and brought us into the black financially. In another company I realized that a schedule that the company had in effect was resulting in additional overnight stays for those involved. By reworking the schedule I was able to save the company many additional overnight stays. I give my attention to anything that effects inefficiencies and is counter productive.

Question:  "What have you done to .... ?"

Question 17: Whether you are a "computer wizard", how do you respond to the financial side of your responsibilities?

Fiscal responsibility is my forte. Without being “penny wise and dollar foolish” I shop and save wherever I can. I prefer to own stock in the company so that I have an incentive to be fiscally responsible.

Question:  "Whether you are a "computer wizard".... ?"

Question 18: How many people have you supervised in your recent job?

In my most recent management position I supervised twelve people in five states.

Question:  "How many people have you .... ?"

Question 19: What do you like more, working with figures or words?

Words are the main building blocks of communication. In turn communication is the channel to accomplish goals. As a task oriented manager I choose to work with words to accomplish the company’s short and long term goals.

Question:  "What do you like more ..... ?"

Question 20: How do you think that your subordinates receive you?

By treating everyone with respect and keeping them informed of goals and deadlines I have been successful in getting the employees focused on the goal. As a fair but demanding leader the results have been good and the work done has been rewarding.

Question:  "How do you think .... ?"

Question 21: What do you think of your previous boss?

One can not help but admire my past boss who took a company from an idea (expedited freight) to a byword (FedEx it) in minimal time and with few mistakes. Working for Fred Smith has taught me the importance of holding the bottom line, responding quickly to changes in the business environment, and developing political connections. It has been a great education in how to grow a company.

Question:  "What do you think .... ?"

Question 22: Describe a situation in which your work was criticized?

I had this initial business meeting with the vice ambassador of an Asian country. Afterwards a former states department official criticized my business approach. Understanding that everyone can improve I gave attention to the criticism. Then I discussed the issue with the president of the company and adjustments were made. The meeting turned out favorable for the company.

Question:  "Describe a situation .... ?"

Question 23: If I spoke with your boss what he would say about your greatest strength and weaknesses?

He has said in emails to others that I am a born diplomat and a very hard worker. I am sure that he would also say that I am intelligent and have been the “go to” man in many situations. I believe he would say that I am strong executive material.

Question:  "If I spoke with your boss.... ?"

Question 24: How can you handle life under pressure and with tough deadlines?

Of course nobody enjoys pressure or tough deadlines, but I have had many opportunities to perform under pressure. By setting an orderly approach to the situation my team has gotten it done. The first thing I do is honestly communicate the urgency of the situation to the team that I have developed. We together set work priorities and realistic expectations. When this is done deadlines and pressure is minimized and the work is completed.

Question:  "How can you handle .... ?"

Question 25: What do you think you do better: staff work or line work?

Although I am a strong “go to” man that has done staff work, my preference is line work. I enjoy going into the field to analyze and solve problems. Using good communication skills and common sense many problems are resolved quickly.

Question:  "What do you think.... ?"

Question 26: In your current position, what problem have you identified that was previously overlooked?

In my last supervisory role I addressed issues that affected cost control. I analyzed the inventory control within my department and realized that it was inefficient. By organizing and establishing greater inventory control we realized lowered costs within my department.

Question:  "In your current position .... ?"

Question 27: If you had a choice of job and a company what would you choose?

I have always chosen the job over the company. I feel it is more rewarding to do what you desire to do than to be associated with a well known company.

Question:  "If you had a choice of job.... ?"

Question 28:Do you have any objection to take a psychological test?

No objection at all.

Question:  "Do you have any objection.... ?"

Question 29: Do you consider yourself as a creative person?

I see myself as having average creativity with an above average ability to build upon the initial work of others.

Question:  "Do you consider yourself.... ?"

Question 30: How do you describe your personality?

I am hospitable, friendly, and humorous. I meet and greet all people with a big smile. By establishing common ground I bring their ‘guard’ down quickly. People know me as an extrovert who can get along with most everyone.

Question:  "How do you describe.... ?"

Question 31: What is your outside reading you do?

My outside reading includes books and articles in the areas of investment, spiritual renewal, history, and self/job improvement. It is important to keep growing in the fields that are pertinent to your work.

Question:  "What is your outside.... ?"

Question 32: What are some of your outside activities?

My outside activities include jogging, fitness, tennis, exploring, camping, and SCUBA diving.

Question:  "What are some of.... ?"

Question 33: Are you continuing your education?

I expect to read extensively in my new company’s industry. I like to do google.com searches on an important subject matter, competition, and potential customers. Then use that information to advance the company’s market share and position.

Question:  "Are you continuing your.... ?"
