Company Overview
Established in 1881 by humanitarian icon Clara Barton, the American Red Cross (ARC) was born out of her desire to assist Civil War veterans. The ARC is just one of many national branches of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations. Together, they provide volunteer medical assistance to the sick and wounded, regardless of nationality.

Since its inception, the American Red Cross has expanded its range of services into disaster relief, armed-forces emergency support, biomedical services, and teaching lifesaving courses. Today it is the largest supplier of blood, plasma, and tissue products in the U.S. The Red Cross is built on a volunteer workforce of more than 1.3 million people. One in every 200 Americans is a Red Cross volunteer.

The ARC faced some criticism when the organization developed a plan to use some of the proceeds donated for the September 11 terrorist attacks towards other programs. After a public outcry in defense of the families victimized by the event, the ARC board ousted the former CEO who proposed the plan and appointed Marsha John Evans as the new CEO in 2002.
