Energy is at the core of Aquila, Inc.’s (formerly Utilicorp United) more than $10 billion in assets. Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Aquila supplies customers throughout North America, the U.K., and Australia with natural gas and electricity through a network of subsidiaries that do business as Aquila Networks. Aquila Networks also repairs and services appliances, climate control equipment, and other systems for contract and home warranty customers in five states inside its utility territories.The Energy Resources Group is responsible for regulated power activities, including fuel, purchase power, generation dispatch and services to 431,000 wholesale electric distribution customers in Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado. The Capacity Services Group controls and operates Aquila's energy-related assets, including generation, natural gas transportation, and a coal terminal and handling facility. Aquila also owns 90 percent of Everest Communications, which provides a range of broadband services to the Kansas City area.
Aquila Networks Canada serves 1.2 million Canadian customers. U.K. operations consist of Aquila Networks UK, formed through the purchase of Midlands Electricity, the fourth-largest regional electric company in the United Kingdom. Aquila serves Australia through interests in United Energy, MultiNet Gas, and Alinta Gas, serving 571,000 electric customers and 625,000 natural gas customers in areas of metropolitan Melbourne, Victoria.
Like many other utility companies, Aquila is selling off selected assets, such as New Zealand network, to improve its financial picture.
