Company Overview
America West Airlines (AWA), the wholly owned subsidiary of America West Holdings Corporation, operates more than 500 flights a day from hubs in Phoenix and Las Vegas. It takes passengers to and from more than 90 North American destinations; this includes seven in Mexico and two in Canada. With code-sharing agreements (British Airways, Northwest Airlines, and EVA Airways), AWA connects people internationally to more than 115 destinations.

AWA initiated service in August 1983 with three aircraft and 280 employees and achieved status as a major commercial carrier by 1990, boasting revenues of more than $1 billion. A second subsidiary, The Leisure Company, was formed in 1998 and focuses on services for the leisure travel market.

Due to the 9/11 attacks, AWA was forced to cut back on flights and lay off more than 2,000 employees. It was the first to apply for federally guaranteed loans following the attacks.

The company now has plans to increase flights to and from Phoenix and Las Vegas as well as expand its code-sharing agreements. It has signed on with Hotwire to increase its online presence.
