Company Overview
There are more than 1,000 nonprofit organizations with the word cancer in their names, but this is the original and the largest nonprofit in the country devoted to fighting cancer. Its official goal is to reduce cancer death rates by 50 percent by 2015. Founded in 1913 by a group of New York doctors, it now has locations in over 3,400 communities nationwide.The society works on all fronts of cancer prevention, from sponsoring community-based programs and lobbying against the tobacco industry to providing an around-the-clock national call center and helping HMOs improve early cancer-detection techniques. Last year it floated $84.3 million in grants into the scientific community for cancer-related research.
Funded through public support, the ACS reported $556.2 million in donations for fiscal year 1997-98, a 13.9 percent increase over the previous year. It reports that 71 percent of its revenue is spent on programs and research, and 29 percent goes towards overhead costs.
