Company Overview
American Standard comprises three business units: bath and kitchen (fixtures and faucets for consumer and corporate markets), heating and cooling (air conditioning systems), and vehicle controls (electronic braking, stability, suspension and transmission control systems). The company’s brands include Trane and American Standard air conditioners and American Standard and Ideal Standard fixtures and faucets. In the face of a 1988 hostile takeover bid by Black & Decker, American Standard became a privately held corporation, financing the buyout by selling off its Steelcraft division, Manhattan headquarters, railway signal and brake business, pneumatic-controls business, and Tyler Refrigeration. In 1995, the company went public again.
The company subscribes to the Six Sigma philosophy of management, which emphasizes efficiency and accountability and can result in rigorous employee reviews.
