Alterra, one of the major players among assisted living operators, is trying to make its way through hard times currently. In response to an excessive debt load, in January 2003 the company filed for bankruptcy; it plans to operate its businesses as usual while it goes through a reorganization process.

Formed in 1981, Alterra was originally called Alternative Living Services. The company now has operations in 24 states, including more than 400 assisted living residences with a resident capacity of nearly 20,000.
