Company Overview
Altera produces and markets 11 different families of Programmable Logic Devices (PLDs), programmable integrated circuits, as well as certain logic development tools. The company also provides the software and support for the PLDs. Based in San Jose, Altera is courted by companies in the communication, computing, and industrial markets. Its customer base of more than 14,000 is split between North American and international buyers. The international market makes up about 60 percent of sales.

Altera experienced a sharp drop in sales in 2000 due to poor market conditions. In 2001, the company recovered some of its lost revenues with the successful release of Quarus II development software. The following year, Altera followed up its new product success with the release of three new product families: Statix, Cyclone, and Stratix GX.

Due to the rising front-end costs of developing ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) and ASSP (application-specific standard product) systems, making these systems increasingly expensive for applications and narrowing product lines, Altera anticipates a market opening of more than $2 billion. The company hopes to take advantage of opportunities with continued innovation and product releases.
