Company Overview
In early 1999, Albertson's, Inc., purchased the American Stores Company for $11.7 billion, becoming one of the nation's largest retail and drug chains with more than 2,470 stores in 38 states. This acquisition included the Lucky's, Osco Drug, and Sav-on chains. Today, the company sits at number two (behind Kroger) in the rankings of U.S. supermarket chains. Albertson’s runs more than 2,400 stores in 33 states. Other names under Albertson’s include Acme Markets, Jewel, Super Saver, and Max Foods.Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, the company was founded in 1939 by Joe Albertson. He was one of the first to provide products never before seen in the grocery business such as magazines, homemade ice cream, and a scratch bakery. This concept evolved into the one-stop shopping center, revolutionizing the industry. Today's Albertson's stores provide full-service pharmacies, video rentals, delicatessens, and floral products.
Albertson’s brought on a new CEO, Larry Johnston (the former CEO of GE Appliances) in 2001. With his arrival came a massive restructuring that included closing more than 150 underperforming stores as well as laying off about 15 to 20 percent of the non-store workforce. However, these reductions were offset by plans to expand in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Texas. Albertson’s is also refurbishing and building new stores in California to the tune of $1 billion.
The company is also slowly expanding into the online world, offering some West Coast customers the option of ordering from any Albertson’s store and getting that item delivered either to their door or to a neighborhood store.
