Company Overview
As a relatively small airline serving a huge state, Alaska Airlines has made the most of its chosen home in the Pacific Northwest. Serving approximately 40 cities in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Canada, and Mexico with an all-jet fleet, Alaska Airlines is the dominant carrier in this region and offers passengers full service at competitive prices.Alaska Air Group is a holding company for both Alaska Airlines, Inc., founded in 1932, and Horizon Air Industries, acquired in 1986. Horizon Air's turboprop jets serve mostly commuters in 40 cities in Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Canada. The majority of the company's revenues is generated by its passenger air service, with roughly 4 percent of sales coming from cargo services.
As a top-ten U.S. airline, Alaska Air has no dearth of code-sharing partners including American, Continental, and Northwest. Due to the 9/11 attacks and increases in fuel prices, the carrier had to cut back on flights. Demand has taken a conservative upswing in 2002. As such, Alaska has begun to increase the number of flights to established hubs as well as add a few new destinations here and there.
