Company Overview
Akamai is in the business of extending a company’s online infrastructure by providing products and services that primarily focus on supporting the delivery of dynamic, media-rich content. Specializing in streaming media and applications, Akamai aims to improve website speed, quality, and reliability while preventing server overloads and crashes. Akamai launched its commercial service in April 1999, immediately signing the Internet giant, Yahoo!, as one of its charter customers. In January 1999, the company released its flagship service, FreeFlow, allowing ISPs to route desired content through the closest and fastest servers. It followed this debut with FreeFlow Streaming service, a plug-in method of delivering live media to customers. Akamai's EdgeSuite offering, which was released in 2001, analyzes and manages Web traffic, transmitting content from the server geographically closest to the end user. EdgeSuite uses a mark-up language called Edge Side Includes that allows personalized portions of a Web page to be retrieved from origin servers in combination with cached portions that have not been personalized, thus reducing infrastructure costs significantly and improving performance.
With more than a dozen offices in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, Akamai lays claim to more than 12,600 servers in more than 1,000 networks in 66 countries. Clients include Charles Schwab, FedEx, General Motors, Monster.com, MTV, Sony Ericcson, Target, and Xerox.
