Company Overview
Aetna is taking charge of the U.S. health care industry. The Hartford-based insurance company is the leading health care benefits organization in the U.S., with more than 13 million individual members, nearly 12 million dental plan members, and more than 11 million group insurance plan members. Aetna’s services are offered through a network of 552,000 health care provider facilities, 332,000 primary care providers and specialists, and 3,373 hospitals.

In 1996, Aetna sold its property/casualty business and merged with the managed care firm U.S. Healthcare. In 1998, the company purchased the health care businesses of both New York Life and Prudential.

The company embarked on an overhaul beginning in 1999, by selling off its global health and financial services businesses and refocusing on its core business of providing employee benefits services. In 2000, Aetna increased its domestic network of health care providers and pharmacies and increased its emphasis on customer service. In 2001, the company initiated the Aetna Health Fund, to give members more control over how their health care dollars are spent.

Aetna expanded its pharmacy services in 2002 with the acquisition of Eckerd Health Services, a mail-order pharmacy facility.

The company has continued to steam ahead in 2003, increasing its U.S. presence through partnerships and contracts with regional health care providers. Aetna also kicked off a new initiative to reduce the racial and ethnic disparities prevalent in the U.S. health care system. The initiative involves a combination of research, education, and support services.
