Company Overview
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is the second-largest manufacturer of microprocessors. The company makes processors for Windows-compatible PCs, flash memory devices, programmable logic devices, and communications and networking devices.AMD started out in 1969 selling chip designs that were licensed from other companies. The company began making its own chips in the mid-'80s, and was subsequently involved in several copyright disputes with Intel, which were finally settled in 1995.
AMD continues to compete through increased innovation. In January 2003, it announced a partnership with IBM to jointly develop chip-making technologies for use in future high-performance products. AMD is also focusing on the thin-and-light portable computer market. In March 2003, it released a new low-power Athlon processor for use in Fujitsu LifeBooks.
