Company Overview
Accenture started out as a consulting sibling of tax and accounting firm Arthur Andersen. In 1999, tired of having to share its profits with its poorer big sister (it produced about 40 percent of the accounting firm’s profits), Andersen Consulting asked for its independence. The firm was ordered to pay $1 billion and change its name in exchange for freedom. In the wake of the split, Accenture offered about 12 percent of the business to the public market.Today, Accenture is a consulting behemoth. The firm’s traditional strength lies in systems integration, but it also offers strategy, technology consulting, human resources, e-commerce, and outsourcing. Its clients include Blue Cross, the Internal Revenue Service, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems.
The firm has relied on outsourcing to help it through the economic downturn of 2001 to 2002: Outsourcing was up 21 percent in 2001 and accounted for 45 percent of bookings in 2002. The firm cut jobs and postponed new hires throughout 2002, but still plans on hiring in the next year.
