Accel Partners has enjoyed spectacular returns with several successful IPOs, including that of UUNet, a Web service provider that counted as one of the venture community's first forays into the Internet arena. Accel has been in business for more than 20 years and boasts investments in more than 200 companies. It has backed a variety of information technology start-ups, including Real Networks, and enterprise software players such as Remedy, Arbor, and Illustra. Accel's communications portfolio includes PictureTel, Optilink, and Broadband Technologies.In April 1998, Accel introduced a targeted fund for Internet businesses called Internet Technology Fund II, in partnership with Microsoft, Lucent, Compaq, Nortel, and others. In June 2000, Accel announced its $1.6 billion megafund, the Accel Fund XIII. In 2001, Accel and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts formed a venture called Accel-KKR Telecom to focus on telecommunications industry investments.
