Company Overview
Founded in 1970 by four ex-Pentagon employees, American Management Systems (AMS) started out developing and managing centralized computer systems. In the 1990s, the company bloomed into a top-of-the-line IT consulting firm, offering similar services for networks. AMS went public in 1979 and expanded to Europe in 1991.

AMS creates custom suites of software designed for companies’ human resources, customer service, billing, tax, and e-commerce needs; clients include BellSouth, Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina, the U.S. State Department, and the New York City Transit Authority. Although about four-fifths of sales still come from the United States, AMS now has 47 offices worldwide. In 2001, AMS partnered with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to help build its website, medicare.gov. The firm also formed an alliance with Web-based software company Ariba, allowing AMS to market, resell, and implement Ariba’s e-commerce services and applications.

AMS has struggled in the current economic climate. It is now focusing efforts on revitalizing its core business lines, which include communications, media, and entertainment; energy; financial services; health care; and the public sector. As such, it sold its global utilities practice (a non-core business) to Wipro, an Indian technology services leader, for about $26 million in 2002.
