Company Overview
AMR Corporation doesn't just want to move people. This company wants to move information. It all started with American Airlines (AA), now the number-one air carrier in the United States. As AA grew, AMR developed a wealth of other skills and products like logistics management, employee training, and investment services to support the airline and its employees. In the last few years, AMR has trimmed down many of its holdings and concentrated more on its airline operations. In 1999, the company ditched its executive aviation services, ground services, and call center subsidiaries. In 2000, AMR sold its share of Canadian Airlines as well as the SABRE Group, the world's largest information technology provider for the travel industry and a once-prized AMR possession. The following year, the company bought out competitor TWA for $742 million.
Two AA jets were hijacked and used in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The subsequent reduction in airline traffic forced the company to cut about 20 percent of flights and lay off at least 20,000 employees (about 17 percent of the company’s workforce). In November of that same year, another AA jet crashed in Queens, New York, killing 265 people.
AA is still operating at reduced capacity. It is looking to its employees’ labor unions to help it reduce annual costs by $1.8 billion. If the unions reject this plan, AA is looking at filing for bankruptcy protection as a means to restructure the organization.
