Company Overview
American International Group, Inc. (AIG) is a global leader in the insurance industry. The New York-based company is the leading U.S.-based international insurance company, operating in more than 130 countries worldwide. AIG's main foreign business is life insurance; its network of life insurers is the largest in the world. Domestically, AIG is a leading underwriter of commercial and industrial coverage and property/casualty insurance, and also offers myriad financial services, including aircraft leasing, trading and market making, and consumer finance. AIG owns investment products firm SunAmerica.

AIG started out in 1919 representing American insurance companies in Shanghai. In 1939, the company moved its headquarters to New York. It has since expanded into Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe.

The company bolstered its life insurance, financial services, retirement savings, and asset management portfolio through the purchase of American General Corporation in 2001. Integrating the new company resulted in nearly 1,500 layoffs.

AIG has been collecting holdings in the energy and utilities markets lately. In 2002, the company purchased the Williams Gas Pipeline Central and the Western Frontier Pipeline Company. This year, AIG acquired 50 percent of a subsidiary of Duke/UAE Ref-Fuel called American Ref-Fuel, a holding company for six waste-to-energy facilities.
