This company wants to be in pictures. AMC Entertainment is the holding company of American Multi-Cinema, Inc. (AMC); AMC International, Inc.; National Network Cinema, Inc.; and AMC Realty, Inc. AMC operates more than 250 theaters housing 3,500 screens in the U.S. and eight other countries.

The company thinks big, developing megaplexes of 14 or more screens with stadium-style seating and state-of-the-art sound systems. It branched beyond bricks and mortar by teaming up with five other companies to launch MovieTickets.com, an online ticket booth and movie listing website.

In a slow economy, it seems that many people are going to the movies, particularly at AMC theaters. While many of its competitors are filing for bankruptcy reorganization, AMC is continuing to expand through acquisitions. In 2002, the company acquired Gulf States Theaters, adding 68 megaplex screens to its portfolio. In early 2003, AMC bought General Cinema Theaters out of bankruptcy, adding another 621 screens in the U.S. and 160 in South America. The company has also followed suit with many other chains by introducing the AMC Entertainment Card, a debit card-type gift certificate.
