Company Overview
ALZA develops drugs for a number of niche markets, with a special expertise in oral osmotic and transdermal drug delivery technologies, intended as an easy, comfortable alternative to painful injections. Currently, the two greatest areas of drug development are urology and oncology.

The company also manufactures pharmaceuticals, including Ditropan XL, the only once-daily treatment in the U.S. for overactive bladder; Duragesic, a treatment for chronic pain; and Concerta, a treatment for attention deficit disorder. Recent and upcoming drug delivery technologies include implant and electrotransport systems, which offer alternatives to the injections currently used to administer proteins, peptides, and new large-molecule biotechnology products.

ALZA is now a privately held company, purchased by Johnson & Johnson in 2001 for $10 billion.
