AK Steel produces steel for the automotive, appliance, construction, and manufacturing markets. In 1999, it merged with Armco, the nation's largest manufacturer of specialty steels, and in November 2000, it acquired Combined Metal Holdings, Inc. The merger and the acquisition expanded AK Steel’s product offerings, which now include flat-rolled carbon, stainless- and electrical-steel products, as well as standard pipe- and tubular-steel products.AK Steel operates steelworks in Ashland, Kentucky; Butler, Pennsylvania; Rockport, Indiana; and Coshocton, Mansfield, Middletown, and Zanesville, Ohio. It is currently making a bid to acquire National Steel, a bankrupt competitor.
