Company Overview
Supplying network equipment, software solutions, and integration services to telecommunications, cable television, broadcast, wireless, and enterprise networks on a global basis, ADC Telecommunications, Inc., is self-proclaimed as “The Broadband Company.” The company staked its claim in the telecommunications industry during the 1960s with the development of the “bantam jack,” a miniaturized component that eventually became the standard for telephone circuit access and patching. In 1983, the company experienced significant growth when AT&T was ordered to deregulate by the federal government, which established the seven regional Bell operating companies as independent entities, expanding the U.S. telecommunications market by 90 percent. These Bell companies eventually became ADC’s key customer base, confirming the company’s presence as a major provider of broadband communications supplies and services.ADC is looking good, despite the serious challenges currently faced by the telecommunications and high-tech industries. ADC was one of the first companies to recognize the downturn early in 2001, and began restructuring efforts early and aggressively, leaving the company in a much stronger position than many of its counterparts. Looking ahead (towards that fanciful day when carriers will resume spending), ADC will focus on expanding the depth and breadth of broadband and connectivity product offerings. The company is now focused on DSL network edge products and IP-based cable modem termination products along with continued restructuring efforts.
